It was driving us gonzo!  A sewer-like odor coming from our shower.  We poured soap, we poured Drano, we poured anything we could get our hands on down the drain but we couldn’t get rid of the smell.  We finally learned that it was sewer gas coming from drainage system.  Pee-ewe!

A lot of things can be the cause.  For example, a clogged drain, leaks from cracked pipes, sewer back-ups, etc. Well, don’t spend your money on a plumber until you try this DIY trick. If it doesn’t work, THEN call the plumber…

Step 1.  The Vinegar

Pour about 1 cup of vinegar down the drain.  If you drain has a cover, take that off first.

Step 2. The Baking Soda

Immediately dump in about a quarter cup of baking soda and let it stew for a couple of hours.   Set an alarm so that you don’t forget.  If you can,  close the door because the vinegar smell is strong.

Step 3.  Hot Water

Pour a gallon of hot water down the drain.  It has to be hot.

Step 4.  Cold Water

Wait 15 minutes and run cold water for about 15 minutes. This cleanses the drain & rinses the vinegar.  It is  VERY, VERY important that the vinegar is completely gone before you move to the next step.  Mixing vinegar and chlorine bleach can create a dangerous and toxic gas.  Do not skip this step!

Step 5.   Chlorine Bleach

Slowly dump 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach down the drain.   Set the alarm for another two hours and close the door.

Step 6.  Rinse

You now need to let the hot water run for another 15 minutes to get rid of the chlorine bleach.

Step 7.  Mineral Oil

You made it to the final step.  Pour 4 oz. of mineral oil down the drain.

This worked great.  Its been 3 months and the smell has not returned.

Good luck!
